CD Alcantar Manuel Mayte Martin
The idea of “Alcantara Manuel” sprung out of my love for the work of the poet Manuel Alcántara; out of my complete affinity with the lyricism and the expressly intimate character of his poems and with the wish of bringing forth, in a singular but respectful way, that which Manuel might sing if – instead of recounting it – he were to sing about his life.
From his output I made a choice of the poems which touched me the most, placing at the service of such beauty all my linguistic capacities of feeling, all my freedom and my lack of prejudices, with the purpose of allowing each of these poems to inhabit the soundscape which I felt was natural and appropriate for it. All of these arose and grew to fruition in different musical climates. Which is as it should be, because one does not want to be contemplating the same scenery whilst talking about love and about war.
In this way I discovered an Argentinean tango hidden within the heart-rending poem which Alcántara wrote for his admired and respected Manuel Altolaguirre; and in his Paloma de Picasso, a cantiña with all the salty taste of his beloved Málaga.
Since flamenco already dwelt both in the pen of Manuel and in the most primitive roots of my soul, this project was born and was to grow unfettered from its inception; free in such an urgent and pressing way that I never even needed to consider having to avoid labels which might have tried to fence in and limit the beauty of it all.
There is an additional truth in the form of sound which will forever remain impregnated in the air... I thank you deeply for wishing to breath that air along with me.
