Bo Diddley could probably be said to represent "rock 'n" roll's third way' all by himself. He belongs neither to the "Daddy's rock" style, incarnated by Bill Haley and destined to help build Twist into a major movement… nor to the "historical rock rebel" style incarnated by Elvis, at least until the 24th of March 1958, the date he enlisted in the army, leaving his place to others, the most dazzling of whom will always be Jerry Lee Lewis and Eddie Cochran. None of Diddley's compositions would qualify for inclusion in a "strictly rock "n' roll" songbook including the likes of: "Rock Around The Clock", "Shake Rattle & Roll", "That's All Right", "Tutti Frutti", "Blue Suede Shoes", "Be-Bop-A-Lula", "Twenty Flight Rock", "Hound Dog", "Great Balls of Fire", "Something Else" or any of the countless and peerless compositions of his friend, Chuck Berry, from "Maybellene" to "Tulane" via "Thirty Days", "Roll Over Beethoven", "Sweet Little Sixteen", "Johnny B. Goode", "Around & Around", "Carol", "Jo Jonne", "Run Rudolph Run", "Nadine", "You Never Can Tell" or "Promised Land" (to name but a few!)
