Description

CD Guitar picking Steve Waring

Finger picking is the oldest way of playing the guitar. It's the classical European technique, that of Spanish flamenco and even of certain traditional African instruments such as the Senegalese kora, or Asian ones such as the Indian sitar.
Playing with a pick (or plectrum) began with the Arabic 'ud, where a feather replaced the pick, then extended to the Greek bouzouki, the Russian balalaika, the Indian sarod (which, unlike the sitar, has its origins in Arab instruments), and above all the Neapolitan mandolin that was imported into the United States very early on, and is at the roots first of the banjo style, then of blues guitar, and the guitar as it's played in jazz, folk and country music, and finally rock.
