'Una selva' means a forest. It is not known whether the word was chosen by Monteverdi or by his editor. The 'Selva' is more than a piece of music: it is a testament. The seventy-four year old Monteverdi, thinking of his demise and remembering that people considered him the music's oracle and the 'light and pride of our century', resolved to compose a musical testament.

Monteverdi's 'Selva' is so diverse, so profuse, so purposefully devoid of structure, that it allows the performer a certain liberty in choosing the order of the pieces. For this recording Françoise Lasserre decided to organize the work into three offices, masses and vespers, which provides a link instrumentation, style and key signature.
