From the middle of the twelfth century, Auvergne, at that time under the suzerainty of Aquitaine, was one of the most significant centres of European culture, as the Romanesque art of the region's churches can still testify today.

The first crusade was preached in Clermont on 27 November 1095 by Pope urban II, and the court of the counts of Auvergne was one of the of the most renewed of its day;

Peirol was active as a poet from 1185 onwards.
He was probably born around 1160 at Peirol castle, now destroyed.
