Between 1760 and 1790, the French oratorio became established as one of the most modern genres thanks to the compositions of Cambini, Gossec, Giroust, Mondonville, Philidor and Sacchini.

Within this repertoire, the oratorios of Henri-Joseph Rigel - The destruction of Jerico, Jephthah, The departure from Egypt - deserve a priviledged place for their consistent level of inspiration and their formal originality.

Their highly dramatic subjects lend themselves to sumptuous musical setting: echoes of distant trumpets, evocations of stormy waters with fully-fledged Romantic orchestral figuration accompanying double choruses, and hymns for female voices alone.
