Everyone knows Swan Lake. But circumstances in Zurich over the past thirty years have clearly not favoured this ballet.
I don’t think there were genuine reservations: the reasons were contingent, coincidental.
My own history with Swan Lake has three act.
An initial encounter with the material, in Basel in 1986, resulted in a fairly “traditional” production.
The Düsseldorf version came at a time when Swan Lake was being staged everywhere, giving me the freedom to try something totally different.
Today, I feel a need to go back to the roots to the work itself – which doesn’t mean I wish to reconstruct some kind of “original”.
